About Dr. Popkin

Michael H. Popkin, Ph.D., founded Active Parenting Publishers in 1983 to assist parents and professionals seeking innovative resources in parent education. That same year he introduced the first video-based parent education program, the Active Parenting Discussion Program. Since then, Dr. Popkin has written and produced a library of video and discussion programs: Active Parenting Today; Active Parenting of Teens; Active Teaching: Enhancing Discipline, Self-Esteem and Student Performance; Free the Horses: A Self-Esteem Adventure; Windows: Healing and Helping through Loss; Parents on Board; and 1,2,3,4 Parents!: Parenting Children Ages 1-4. A nationally recognized expert on parenting, Dr. Popkin has also written the books Active Parenting; So . . . Why Aren’t You Perfect Yet?; Helping Your Child Succeed in School; and Quality Parenting.

Prior to founding Active Parenting Publishers, Dr. Popkin practiced family therapy in metro Atlanta. He received a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and has studied in Austria and England.

Dr. Popkin served on the expert panel assembled for the United States Office of Substance Abuse Prevention. He currently serves on the Georgia State University College of Education Leadership Council and the advisory board for the Atlanta Outward Bound Center. He has also been a finalist for the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Small Businessperson of the Year Award. His commitment to parent education earned Active Parenting Publishers the Positive Parenting Award from the National Council for Children’s Rights.

As a parenting expert and father of two, Dr. Popkin’s professional and personal experiences make him a popular and lively speaker. He frequently speaks at conferences throughout the world and has appeared on more than 50 television shows, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
